Mask Aadhaar
Number in PDF Free
UIDAI recommends hiding the first 8 digits of your Aadhaar before sharing with employers, landlords, or banks. Here's how to do it in seconds.
What UIDAI says about sharing Aadhaar
UIDAI, the authority that manages Aadhaar, explicitly recommends using a Masked Aadhaar when sharing with private entities. Masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits (XXXX XXXX 5678) โ the first 8 are replaced with X. This is enough for a verifier to match against your card without exposing your full 12-digit UID.
The official UIDAI portal (uidai.gov.in) lets you download a pre-masked Aadhaar. But millions of people have older scanned copies of their Aadhaar card saved as PDFs โ from the original laminated card, a DigiLocker export, or a scanned submission. This guide shows how to mask those existing PDFs.
When you need to mask Aadhaar
- Job applications: HR departments frequently photocopy or photograph Aadhaar โ mask before submitting to new employers
- Rental agreements: Landlords ask for Aadhaar as address proof โ share the masked version
- Bank KYC: For non-banking entities (NBFCs, brokers, mutual funds), masked Aadhaar is accepted and recommended
- Online form uploads: Any portal asking for Aadhaar as identity proof โ scholarship portals, loan applications, government schemes
How to mask Aadhaar number in a PDF
LovelyPDF's Redact by Pattern tool automatically detects 12-digit Aadhaar numbers in your PDF and redacts the first 8 digits permanently:
- Open Redact by Pattern on LovelyPDF
- Upload your Aadhaar PDF by dragging or clicking to browse
- Check the Aadhaar Number pattern option
- Preview the detection โ the tool highlights all found Aadhaar numbers
- Click Apply Redactions to permanently black out the first 8 digits
- Download the masked PDF
The redaction is permanent and cryptographically irreversible โ the original digits cannot be recovered from the exported PDF by any software.
For scanned Aadhaar PDFs
If the auto-detection doesn't find your Aadhaar number (common with older scanned copies where digits are stored as image pixels, not text), use the Edit PDF tool instead. Switch to the Redact mode and draw a black rectangle over the first 8 digits manually. This produces the same permanent visual result.
You can also redact other sensitive details at the same time โ date of birth, phone number, or address โ using the PAN, phone, and email pattern options in the Redact by Pattern tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is it mandatory to mask Aadhaar before sharing?
UIDAI strongly recommends it when sharing with private entities (employers, landlords, banks, NBFCs). There is no criminal penalty for sharing an unmasked copy, but UIDAI advises against it because your full 12-digit UID can be misused if the recipient's records are breached. UIDAI provides an official Masked Aadhaar download at uidai.gov.in โ using that or masking your existing copy both achieve the same protection.
Which digits of Aadhaar should I keep visible?
Show only the last 4 digits โ for example, XXXX XXXX 5678. This is the UIDAI-recommended Masked Aadhaar format. The last 4 digits are enough for a verifier to confirm the document is yours without exposing the full number needed to access government services or linked bank accounts.
Does Aadhaar masking work on scanned PDFs?
The Redact by Pattern tool works best on digital PDFs where the Aadhaar number is stored as searchable text. For scanned PDFs (photographs or photocopies), the digits are stored as image pixels and automatic pattern detection will not find them. In that case, use the Edit PDF tool, switch to Redact mode, and manually draw a solid black rectangle over the first 8 digits. The result is identical โ permanent and irreversible.
Is my Aadhaar PDF uploaded to any server when I use LovelyPDF?
No. LovelyPDF processes everything in your browser using JavaScript. Your Aadhaar PDF never leaves your device โ it is not transmitted to any server, logged, or stored. You can verify this by going offline after the page loads; the tool still works. This makes LovelyPDF significantly safer than most online PDF tools for sensitive identity documents.
