How to Crop and Resize PDF Pages — Change Page Size to A4, Letter, or Custom
LovelyPDF's Crop & Resize tool changes the page dimensions of every page in your PDF. You can scale all pages to a standard size (A4, A3, US Letter, Legal), enter completely custom dimensions in mm, inches, or pt, and control how the content fits: stretch to fill, fit with letterboxing, or simply crop the edges. pdf-lib handles everything in your browser — no upload required.
The most practical use of PDF resizing in India is standardising mixed-size documents for submission. When you merge scanned documents from multiple sources — photocopier scans (often A4), phone scans (often non-standard aspect ratios), and downloaded certificates (sometimes US Letter) — the merged PDF has inconsistent page sizes that look wrong when printed. Resizing all pages to A4 before submitting to a court registry, college, or government portal ensures consistent printing and a professional appearance. RERA project documents and tender submissions commonly require all pages to be A4 size. The crop feature is useful for scanned documents with wide black borders from the scanner bed — cropping a few millimetres off each side produces a clean, borderless page.
How to Resize or Crop Your PDF Pages
- Upload your PDF by clicking or dragging it onto the tool
- Choose a preset page size (A4, A3, Letter, Legal) or enter custom dimensions
- Select fit mode: Fit content to scale proportionally, or Stretch to fill exactly
- Set crop margins if you want to trim the edges (negative margins expand the page, positive values crop)
- Click Apply & Download
Crop vs Resize — What's the Difference
Resizing changes the declared page dimensions and scales the content to fit. A US Letter page scaled to A4 will have its content stretched or shrunk to fill the new size — nothing is cut off. Cropping trims the edges without scaling: content that falls outside the new boundary is removed (it stays in the PDF MediaBox but is clipped by the CropBox, so it's hidden rather than permanently deleted). Use resizing to standardise page dimensions; use cropping to remove scanner borders or excess whitespace without affecting content scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resizing to A4 distort my document content?
In Fit mode, content scales proportionally — the aspect ratio is preserved and letterbox bars fill the remaining space. In Stretch mode, content scales to fill the page exactly, which may distort images. For most document-to-document conversions (Letter to A4), the difference in dimensions is small enough that distortion is not visible.
I have black borders from the scanner — how do I remove them?
Use the Crop Margins fields. Enter positive values (e.g. 5mm on each side) to trim the edges. The black scanner border is removed and the resulting page is slightly smaller. You can then resize to A4 to restore standard dimensions.
Can I resize individual pages to different sizes?
The tool applies the same size to all pages. To resize individual pages differently, use Split PDF to extract them, resize each group separately, then Merge PDF to recombine.
What page size should I use for Indian government portal submissions?
A4 (210 × 297 mm) is the standard in India for all government, legal, and official document submissions. Use A4 when in doubt. US Letter is common in US-origin document templates and should be converted to A4 before submitting to Indian portals.
